Traveling to Cologne

  • Frankfurt Airport

There are many airlines that fly from the East Coast to Frankfurt, Germany, including Lufthansa, Condor, and United Airlines.

The average flight time is around 8 hours, and there are about 59 direct flights from the United States to Frankfurt every day.

Most flights depart in the afternoon, with 4 PM being the most common departure time. We recommend an evening departure time if possible for all of our US guests so that you have the best opportunity to get some rest and wake up in Germany.

  • Frankfurt > Cologne by Train

Most often when we fly in to the area to see our family, we will opt to fly to Frankfurt and take the train to Cologne. The Cologne main train station (featured in the page header image) lets you out smack in the middle of the city right next to the beautiful Cathedral.

If you take the fast ICE train you will arrive in Cologne in about 1 hour. There is a dining cart where it's nice to post up and have a snack, a coffee, or even your first beer as you wait to get to your destination.

The train station is located INSIDE Frankfurt Airport, just follow the signs or ask for directions if you need them and you should be able to find it with little to no issue. Look for these big vaulted glass veilings, their a big giveaway you've made it.

  • Koeln Bonn Airport

Much like the flight to Frankfurt, there are any airlines that fly from the United States to Cologne, including Lufthansa, United, Air Canada, and Brussels Airlines.

The flight time is essentially the same and we recommend the same flight time as with the Frankfurt airport flight. It is just the best way to try to get some rest especially with the impending jet lag.

Taking the Train

Nervous to get from the airport to the long distance train station?

For our guests who have either/both never been to Germany or never traveled abroad, this video I happened to stumble upon is a very helpful step by step guide to get you from landing at your gate in Frankfurt, to your bag at baggage claim, through customs, and off to your train! (Remember the big glass dome - it’s your sign that you’ve made it!)
